I thought I would start with one of the most controversial and debated topics, diet!
ANIMAL BASED FOR STARTERS
When people ask me what to eat, I start with this and say eat from this food pyramid (upside down obviously).
The most important thing for the body is to consume nutrient dense foods. What is the most nutrient dense food in the world? Liver! All organs for that matter, but liver is the king.
Eat Enough Protein
Consume at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight, ideally more than that. Protein is the most satiating macronutrient and it’s the building block for muscle, which is the organ of longevity.
Eat Nose To Tail
In today’s modern world we tend to eat what I call ‘Muscle Meats’. Chicken breast, beef mince, lamb chops. These are all great, but if you go back and look at indigenous cultures around the world, the most prized parts of the animal were the organs. ‘Offal’ as most people in Australia know it. The reason being is that organs are the most nutrient dense foods in the world. They contain vitamins, minerals and co-factors that muscle meats simply do not.
A really easy way to think about how important organ meats are is to think about how important your organs are to your body. Your heart, liver, kidneys, brain — they keep you alive. They are the most important, nutrient hungry parts of your body and they need to be fed.
If you aren’t eating organs, I would highly recommend supplementing with desiccated organ supplements. I personally take Heart & Soil supplements (by Dr Paul Saladino).
Cut The Crap
- Seed oils (canola, sunflower, vegetable oil, margarine)
- Processed foods
- Sugar (in excess)
- Alcohol
These are the biggest contributors to metabolic disease and chronic illness. If you do nothing else, cut these out.
My Favourite Resources
The Carnivore Code by Paul Saladino is a great starting point. Paul is a MD who has done a phenomenal job of breaking down the science behind an animal-based diet.
Weston A. Price was a dentist in the 1930s who travelled the world studying indigenous cultures and their diets. His findings were remarkable. The healthiest cultures in the world were eating nutrient dense, animal-based whole foods. The Weston A. Price Foundation continues his work today and I highly recommend checking them out.
Deep Nutrition by Dr Cate Shanahan is another fantastic book. She breaks down the 4 pillars of the human diet and why we need to go back to eating the way our ancestors did.
Eat Like A Human by Dr Bill Schindler is a great book on the practical side of traditional food preparation.
Summary
- Eat animal-based, nose to tail
- Prioritise protein (1g per lb of body weight minimum)
- Eat organs or supplement with desiccated organs
- Cut seed oils, processed foods, excess sugar, and alcohol
- Read the books above and check out the Weston A. Price Foundation
